Frivolous Worries

When I think about Colby, a whole bunch of worries come to my mind. I worry about if Colby will be a kind person, wild as a teenager, and if she won't take school seriously. There are less important things that occur to me nowadays that still worry me though! Like, I worry that she won't be 'a reader.' It drives me crazy when I recommend a book to my sister (Kim!) and she's like, "I'm sure it is good, Kelly, but you know I'm not a reader like you are." I have thought about that a lot...what if she doesn't enjoy curling up on the couch and reading on a rainy day like me?!!! That will kill me!!! So, at night before she goes to bed, we read books. She pays attention really well so far! Her favorite is "Barnyard Dance." Mine are "Sheep in a Jeep" and "The Monster at the End of This Book"...that silly Grover.

Yesterday I discovered a new fear. In my inbox was the latest email from Amy Grant's website. Yes, in my old age, I can admit these truly dorky things and not care what people think...for the most part. But, seriously, what if Colby doesn't enjoy and obsess over the music trifecta of my childhood: Amy Grant, Marie Osmond, and Barbara Mandrell! Seriously, Nick tells me all the time "that I wasn't raised to be cool." I don't care at all. I was not only Country When it Wasn't Cool, but I was also A Little Bit Country and A Little Bit Rock-n-Roll...and none of it mattered because Angels Were Watching Over Me!

Yes, I know. Colby is not probably going to like these songs from my childhood....UNLESS, I made them songs from HER childhood; so, I've started singing my favorites to her...when Nick isn't around to remind me of how I'm a dork and making her into a dork!

Here are a few pictures from the last week! Have a great weekend!

Colby's first time in her high chair. Hmmm....not quite sure of it at first.

Now I like it! Colby's starting to reach for toys, and it's much easier for her to do it when in her high chair vs on the floor.

Grandma McCormick and her McCormick cousins. Ross was not happy about the photo op!

Hello, there, pretty girl! My, oh, my, that's quite a tummy you have on you!

This is one of my best friends from my childhood, Erin, and her family. Last weekend we were honored to be baptismal sponsors for my friend Erin's new daughter, Audrey. Nick and I were thrilled to be asked! Continuing the theme of this post, Nick and Erin's husband, Eric, made fun of me and Erin's childhood dorkiness most of the evening. When Erin and I would spend the night at each others' houses, we would lay around and read books all weekend. That was our idea of fun. Sometimes we would read the SAME book at once and race to see who could get a page read first. While it didn't contribute to our popularity, I'm sure it helped us on the reading comprehension portion of the ACT. Like that matters today.

Love this post - i am a fellow dork - Barbara Mandrell fan, book lover and all!!

I worry about my girls ALL.THE.TIME. mainly that the other little snotty girls will be mean to them and what it will do to their self esteem during their school years.... i could spend weeks on end in tears worrying about things - thankfully they keep me too busy for that and i only get to dwell on it for about 30 seconds at a time before another "MOMMA!" call is issued!!

Kolby is adorable!!

I can't believe she is already in her high chair! I feel like I just put Amelia in hers! Colby is right behind her! She is such a cutie! Don't worry Kelly, I think that everyone is afraid that their kids will not enjoy the same things they did! Oh well, I am sure that all of our kids will think we are dorks anyway!
love - Kori

First of all -- Kori, you DID just put Amelia in her high chair!!!!! (Well, maybe a couple of months ago!)

And Kelly, isn't there someone missing from Erin's family picture?!?!? Where is August? Or is this an "Audrey's Day Picture"?

Great pictures Kelly. I should've taken the picture of Ar and the kids w/ Ar's camera so you could've had time to get a picture w/ your camera!! What was I thinking? Sorry my kids didn't last long in the hot seat.
What a nice evening. Autumn

First of all, Colby is adorable! I can't believe how fast she is growing!!! I love reading your blog, because it gives me things to look forward to with Henry!

Second of all, I am the queen of worrying about frivolous stuff!!! I worry constantly that Henry will hate reading, hate school, hate me and Tony and his brothers will completely corrupt him :) My only relief is....well I really don't have any! I just pray he has enough of me in him to be a little bit dorky!!! And he won't listen to everything his uncle's teach him. :)

Gabby is already 'reading'. She will wake up on a Saturday morning, grab a book and read to Elmo or Rabbit or whatever slept in her bed the night before. If only I could get the video camera out in time to capture it! She also is a singer - she'll sing random songs that I've never heard and usually have some sort of 'heavenly' theme to them....she usually sings them on Sundays after church. Heaven must be the only word she remembers from church!

I too worry she won't like to read as I do but if we lead by example, surely they'll follow - right?!?!

I just decided I DON'T need to read your blog because you gave me a whole host of frivolous worries, such as that Z is still sleeping in his car seat and not the crib and that you sing Colby positive songs like Amy Grant and I had a long talk with him the other day about how he is doomed to love 80's music and, in particular Duran Duran, because it is hard wired into Mommy's brain (thanks to Aunt Sara) and likely was passed into his genes. When he was a week old, I'll never forget...he was fussy and I was and Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" came on the radio and I sang it to him and he looked at me like I was the best singer in the world! I felt bad singing to him about shady street people hooking up, but, hey, it worked!

Anyway, Kelly, you are a fab mom and Colby is going to grow up strong and smart like you, but also independent – just like you – and will like what she likes and make no excuses for it!
